Lukla, 28 December
Hike for Help has announced its support for the care, management, and daily feeding of stray dogs in Lukla, Ward No. 2 of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Solukhumbu.
The initiative comes after the growing number of stray dogs in the area began to affect tourism, with visitors increasingly expressing concerns about safety and disturbances.
To address the issue, an agreement has been signed between Hike for Help President Lhakpa Sherpa and Ang Phurba Sherpa, Ward Chairperson of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality–2, Lukla, outlining a plan for the management of stray dogs.
Under the agreement, Hike for Help will provide daily food for 87 stray dogs in Lukla.
Lhakpa Sherpa said the decision was made after he personally observed how the situation was affecting tourists. Sherpa, who regularly accompanies foreign climbers in the region, noted that many visitors felt uneasy due to the presence of stray dogs.
“Dogs barking through the night were disturbing tourists’ sleep, and at the same time, many felt unsafe moving around,” Sherpa said. “Seeing this firsthand, we decided that Hike for Help should take responsibility for the dogs’ care, management, and daily feeding.”
